Two pieces of news in early April 2018 could mean more newcomers in Canada. Israel has reached a deal with UN which could see more than 16,250 migrants from Africa sent to Western countries, including Canada. The refugee seekers, mostly men from Eritrea and Sudan, have stated they have faced war and are not willing to return to Africa.
In other news, United States President Donald Trump has stated he is ending the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which gave undocumented residents brought into the United States as children the right to live and work in the country. In a tweet sent over the Easter weekend, the president made what could be announcement to the end of the DACA program: “Border Patrol Agents are not allowed to properly do their job at the Border because of ridiculous liberal (Democrat) laws like Catch & Release. Getting more dangerous. “Caravans” coming. Republicans must go to Nuclear Option to pass tough laws NOW. NO MORE DACA DEAL!”
The following day, the president seemed to reinforce his position with another tweet: “DACA is dead because the Democrats didn’t care or act, and now everyone wants to get onto the DACA bandwagon… No longer works. Must build Wall and secure our borders with proper Border legislation. Democrats want No Borders, hence drugs and crime!”
While the tweets do not officially end the DACA program, those who live in the United States under the protection of DACA may wish to seek other areas in case the program is terminated. Canada is one location which may attract those who have lived in the United States their whole lives and obtained DACA protection. Canada has a similar language and culture and offers job and housing opportunities. It is not yet known how many, if any, DACA recipients will consider moving to Canada.
The president may be seeking to place additional pressure on Mexico in NAFTA talks to change secure measures at the Mexico-US border. Immigration debate in Congress is ongoing and it is not certain what impact the latest claims from the president will have on those discussions.
